Sheriff Carmine Marceno
Sheriff Carmine Marceno

In the sun-soaked expanses of Southwest Florida, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno has cultivated an image as a no-nonsense lawman, boasting a massive social media following and endorsements from high-profile conservatives like President-elect Donald Trump. Appointed in 2018 and re-elected in 2024 with an overwhelming 91% of the vote, Marceno’s “zero-tolerance” approach to crime—through initiatives like the School Threat Enforcement Team and an expanded narcotics unit—has earned him praise from supporters. Yet, beneath this polished facade lies a web of allegations that have thrust him into the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons. As of August 31, 2025, an ongoing federal grand jury investigation and a slew of lawsuits paint a troubling picture of potential corruption, ethical lapses, and inflammatory tactics.

At the heart of the storm is a federal probe into alleged money laundering, kickbacks, and financial improprieties. It all escalated in September 2024 when claims surfaced involving jeweler Ken Romano, a former associate of Marceno. Romano alleged a “no-work” consulting contract with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) worth $5,700 monthly, from which he was instructed to kick back funds for a luxury Mercedes for Marceno’s father. Adding fuel to the fire, a video emerged showing Marceno accepting a stack of cash from Romano at his store, described by Marceno’s attorney as a “legitimate” transaction but lacking specifics. The investigation has expanded to scrutinize construction permits at Marceno’s home and LCSO headquarters, unreported gifts over $100,000, and suspicious financial disclosures—including consistent six-figure gambling winnings from slots, which experts deem statistically improbable.

Marceno’s political ties have also come under the microscope. His committee donated $50,000 to another sheriff’s PAC, and he’s floated a congressional run amid the probe, which critics like Democrat Cindy Banyai see as a bid for protection from allies like Trump. Despite denials of wrongdoing and claims of “political lawfare,” calls for his resignation have grown, including from within his own party. Governor Ron DeSantis has stayed silent, drawing ire from commentators.

Beyond finances, Marceno faces lawsuits alleging misconduct within LCSO. A 2023 federal suit claims he orchestrated a false arrest by planting drugs as revenge, violating constitutional rights. Nepotism concerns arose when an undersheriff’s wife landed a high-paying job in his department, and hypocrisy claims followed a video of Marceno speeding in a Lamborghini—despite his crackdowns on street racing.

His public persona amplifies the controversy. Marceno’s viral TikToks and X posts, where he dubs the jail the “Marceno Motel” and labels suspects “trash” or suggests euthanasia, have been slammed for dehumanizing rhetoric that could incite excessive force. A leaked internal video warning “your ass will get beat” for crimes drew expert warnings of legal risks. Even a perp walk video of a 10-year-old drew global backlash for insensitivity. Politically charged comments, like telling Democrats to “change your views or go back,” have deepened divisions.

As the federal investigation drags on without indictments, Marceno continues daily operations, focusing on community safety. But whispers of a documentary on his alleged corruption circulate online. In an era demanding transparency from law enforcement, Marceno’s saga raises critical questions: Is this tough-on-crime sheriff a victim of smears, or is there fire behind the smoke? The people of Lee County—and perhaps Congress—may soon decide.
